To call love light is a bold remark,
But for life and food and myth and stone
The deepest roots take hold in the dark.

When speared in jest from an arrow’s arc
It’s with heavy words we must atone
To call love light is a bold remark.

It takes soldier strength, a fighter’s mark,
To lift the spirit, whole, and alone.
The deepest roots take hold in the dark.

Love casts virgin flame from elder spark,
A spinster’s wail, and a maiden’s moan
To call love light is a bold remark.

In the creeping cold of morning, stark
Hot passions run in the blood and bone.
The deepest roots take hold in the dark.

On waters calm, leave no ripple mark
From pebbles tossed or daggers thrown.
To call love light is a bold remark.
The deepest roots take hold in the dark.
